How Early Should You Get to the Airport? A Practical Guide
There is no single rule. Your airline sets the latest time you can check in and drop bags, and that is the deadline that matters. The rest of the advice is about leaving yourself a margin.
Common guidance
For domestic flights many travelers aim to be at the airport about two hours before departure at a large airport and somewhat less at a small one. For international flights, three hours is a common planning figure because of longer check-in and document checks.
These are planning habits, not rules. Check the cutoffs on your airline booking, because bag drop usually closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure and boarding closes before the scheduled time.
What adds time
Checking a bag, traveling during a holiday period, early morning peaks, rental car returns, parking in remote lots and traveling with children all add time. A big airport with multiple terminals needs extra margin if your gate is far from the checkpoint.
What saves time
Carry-on only, checking in online, using TSA PreCheck or a similar program, and arriving in an off-peak window all cut the time you need. Traveler reports on each airport page show what security lines have been like recently.
